Hythe Conservation

Harriet Sylvester is a qualified conservator and restorer. Harriet has worked on a variety of materials from public and private collections in the UK and abroad.

In September 2020, Harriet set up Hythe Conservation. Working from her studio in Woodbridge, Suffolk. In addition to undertaking private client work, Harriet also works as a nationwide freelancer.

‘Hythe’ Conservation is a reference to the historic riverside town of Woodbridge, Suffolk. The name refers to a river landing-place, derived from the Anglo-Saxon word hithe meaning a haven. The market town of Woodbridge known for the River Deben, views across to the Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo and a rare example of a working Tide Mill. 

Harriet is an Associate Member of The Institute of Conservation (ICON).

I feel it is really important to protect and preserve objects for the benefit of future generations. I gain a huge sense of personal achievement and satisfaction from working through initial proposals to the completion of treatments.

 

Academic and Employment Background

Harriet completed her Undergraduate Degree in Conservation and Restoration at the University of Lincoln in 2014. She spent two years at the internationally recognised West Dean College of Arts and Conservation, achieving a Masters Degree in Conservation Studies specialising in ceramics and glass.

During the course of her studies, Harriet was awarded The British Antique Dealers’ Association Scholarship and the BADA Geoffrey Moss Prize for her Graduate Diploma. Harriet achieved additional awards from the Anna Plowden Trust, the Edward James Foundation and the City of Chichester DFAS (NADFAS Sussex Area).  

Having gained valuable conservation experience at the renowned Plowden & Smith and the Royal Collection Trust, London. Harriet joined Richard Rogers Conservation Ltd, Surrey, as a Sculpture and Objects Conservator, where she worked for over three years.

In November 2020, Harriet successfully completed The Art Institute course, graduating with a Diploma in Art Appreciation.

She has also enjoyed volunteering for the National Trust.
